A brightly embroidered handkerchief depicting Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens.

Annie Sprinkle (b.1954) and Beth Stephens (b.1960) – Ecosexuality

Nominated by Stefan Dickers, Michelle Olley and Melinda Gebbie.

Words by Michelle Olley, handkerchief by Dave Johnson and Melinda Gebbie.

Annie Sprinkle is the most-nominated figure on the Wall. From Stefan Dickers, Special Collections and Archives Manager at Bishopsgate Institute to feminist comix artist Melinda Gebbie, there is a feeling that if anyone deserves to be called a hero, it’s Annie.

A certified sexologist, performance artist, former sex worker, adult film star, filmmaker and sex-positive activist, Annie has worked tirelessly to educate and eradicate the stigma and censure around sex and sexuality. Her recent work with wife and fellow, performance artist Beth Stephens, takes the next step beyond sex activism and education to harness sex positivity to the burning issue of our age – the climate. Annie and Beth’s concept, which they refer to as ecosexuality, reframes our relationship to nature, suggesting we evolve beyond Earth as Mother – to Earth as Lover, with all the responsibility and mutual respect that entails.

This artwork is part of The Wall of Sexual Heroes, a collaborative textile art piece featured in our previous exhibitions at the Horse Hospital (2022) and Bow Arts Lab (2023). All embroidered, printed and appliquėd handkerchiefs celebrate unsung heroes of sexual emancipation, activism and innovation.

The Wall is an organic work. If you would like to contribute, please get in touch with The Keeper.
